Introducing the Two-Four-Six Ruler

If you have been following this Substack you will know that seam lines are taken very seriously around here.

In the previous post we used the standard French curve to alter the crotch seam line effectively. This ruler is part of every fashion student’s tool kit.

But wait…… one thing we know about fashion education is that plus size drafting is a neglected topic.

Beyond ‘Standard’

Does the standard Dietzen #17 French curve adequately address the scale of the curved lines in patterns for humans in the plus sized category?

Not adequately IMO which is why I have made a version that is appropriately scaled for patterns in the range considered plus sized.

This ruler is calibrated in inches and metric. I am calling it the Two-Four-Six ruler because it gives 24 inches and 60 cm of calibration. Although it was created with plus-sized pattern creation and adjustments in mind, it is for everyone and will be useful for everyone. Special thanks to the people at the Curvy Coven and others with bodies that have been marginalized by the fashion industry for reminding us that improving the systems that do not serve one segment of the population adequately in fact will improve the system for every body.

Just like the previous digital French ruler, you get mirrored rulers and extended tick marks so you can choose between convex and concave lines and line everything up for those smooth intersections. The only difference is that this ruler will not fit onto a single sheet of regular printer paper in its entirety so after printing at 100% you will cut the two pieces apart and tape together.
